In the Garden
Holy Basil will do great in your flower garden or in a container. It needs well-drained soil and will do best with only a half-day of sun. It attracts butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds when it is blooming. The plant is an annual but it will re-seed itself and come back year after year as a true Tulsi Holy basil.
Plant Uses
Holy Basil is native to India and is also referred to as “Tulsi”. It is generally not used as a culinary herb because it tastes bitter and musky. It is a sacred plant in the Hindu religion and if you traveled to India you would see it growing all around Hindu temples. It is believed to have numerous medicinal uses including relief from stress, cough, fever, sore throat, and insect bites. Generally, it is boiled or added to a hot tea and then consumed or gargled. One pinched off flower can provide aroma to an entire room of your home. This is one of Mary Dunford’s favorites.
