Plant Specifications
Ocimum basilicum ‘Purpurascens’. Partial Sun. Tender Annual. Height: 1 ½’ is an improved variety of Dark opal basil. Like many culinary basils, it is a cultivar of Ocimum basilicum (sweet basil). This basil variety has unusual reddish-purple leaves, and a clove-like spiciness flavor, making it superb for salads and garnishes. It is also a beautiful ornamental for the garden.
In the Garden
Opal Red Rubin basil makes a great addition to your flower garden because of it’s opal color and dark pink flowers. It attracts butterflies, bees and hummingbirds. In warmer weather, the leaves will begin to add a slight green color as you can see in the picture. It doesn’t do as well in a container because it is tender and susceptible to over-watering. Plant it in the full sun in well drained soil.
Plant Uses
Opal Red Rubin basil is not generally used as a culinary basil but it is edible and can be used in herbal butter and vinegar. It has a cinnamon and anise aroma which will add wonderful scent and color to your herb or flower garden. It can be used in fresh cut and dried flower arrangments.
